Red Bull Speed Street Singapore 2011 - Bull run along the heart of Orchard

Renault showed off a little bit of what their experience in motorsport has taught them -  their Megane Sport RS in the blue-and-silver Red Bull livery was given its time on the tarmac by stunt driver Frédéric Johais.  The Frenchman showing just why he is such a highly regarded stunt driver as he thrilled the crowd with his own repertoire of handbrake turns and donuts.

At the end of the one-hour demonstration, David Coulthard rode shotgun in a lap around the street to the delight of the crowd which greeted the ever-popular Scot with enthusiastic cheers and applause.  Proof, as if any was needed, that the legendary McLaren and Red Bull driver remains as popular as ever despite having been absent from the starting grid in Formula one since the end of the 2008 Formula 1 season.  The ever-likable Coulthard remarked after the event, “the street was very smooth and suitable for the speed of the car. The turnout was impressive and I would definitely love to drive in Singapore again.”  The impressive turnout is indicative of the popularity of motorsport in Singapore and the kind of excitement that has been generated in the wake of the introduction of the Singapore Grand Prix.

The festivities were, however, not limited to the streets as Ngee Ann City’s Civic Plaza played host to a collection of displays and side events such as the Gran Turismo 5 tentage where visitors got to try their hand at piloting the Red Bull X2010 hypercar (albeit virtually) as well as see Renault and Audi cars on display.

For sheer thrill factor and for chance to see some real traffic stoppers,  it must be said that the Red Bull Speed Street event was a resounding success.  Here’s hoping that they bring the Speed back to our Street soon.

Red Bull racing deserve to be champions and this is a nice way to celebrate! Next time I hope to see even more of the car in action tho’ maybe they should do a gymkhana?

  2. KeatoN says:

Will Ferrari do this in SG? We relli need more events like this to bring up the excitement of the local scene. Also, maybe nex time they will be able to have stands for the viewers? I couldn’t see most of action coz all the good spots got snap up relli fast!

  3. Chris says:

    @ Ho:

Gymkhana would need a bit more space I would think… But I do think it’s a good idea that we have something like this happen again. The crowd at orchard was pretty big and very enthusiastic from what I could see. Red Bull and the supporting sponsors and exhibitors did a very good job with this event.

    @ Keaton:

We can’t say for sure whether Ferrari would have a similar event, after all, at first glance, Red Bull has much more mass appeal as a product that people can enjoy than Ferrari. But having said that, Ferrari is a global brand and probably the most famous F1 marque of all. What they really need to get something like that off the ground will be sponsors and most importantly, support from the fans such as yourselves!

  4. KeatoN says:

Hi! +1 Chris. If they do, I surely will defeinitly support it! Its a good first time for Red Bull still. COME AGAIN NEX YEAR!

  5. Joel Chin says:

If you’re referring to the F1 Team, Ferrari doesn’t do publicity shows like this (they believe their name doesn’t need it :p). When Alonso did do one at Barcelona last year in his first outing with Ferrari if I’m not mistaken, the other teams slammed them for using this ‘public show’ as a front for additional testing time. Probably the reason why DC drove and not Vettel or Webber, you know apart from the fact that they may busy doing actual racing!

  6. RMCF-R7 says:

you know, this year F1 gonna be really big in Singapore! Maybe bigger than last year because they are doing so much now to promote it closer to fans. how about other type of racing like the GT and rally?

but the publicty, i think nothing come closer to this already. i heart red bull!

after this is only football more popular but maybe it changes soon?

    hala madrid!
